Simple Tests You Can Do With The Design
Nielsen Norman Group shared three ways to pressure-test an exterior concept before it reaches
production.
THE SQUINT TEST
THE DRIVE-BY TEST
If the message softens or disappears
Glance at it for two seconds. What sticks?
when you squint, contrast likely needs
strengthening.
THE GRAYSCALE TEST
Remove color entirely. Does the hierarchy
still hold? If it collapses, you’re relying on
hue instead of structure.
When a design struggles under these tests, the
solution is rarely more embellishment. It’s almost
always simplification.
Shared Responsibility
Visibility isn’t owned by one department. Sales teams should
start conversations with distance and traffic speed, not just
brand standards. Designers need to be comfortable pushing
scale further than what feels intuitive. Fabricators must flag
details that won’t translate at size. Installers have the final say
in placement and angle—both of which can either enhance or
undermine readability.
The Real Measure Of Success
Follow these rules for outside success:
1. Design exterior signage for recognition, not admiration.
Prioritize instant comprehension over intricate detail.
2. Test visibility at real-world distances and speeds. Step back
across the parking lot. View the sign from the roadway
and see it for yourself.
3. Choose materials and finishes with environmental
performance in mind. Account for glare, sun exposure,
and other factors that might alter your sign.
4. Limit visual noise and rely on contrast and scale rather
than volume.
In the end, recognition wins. Because on the road, clarity beats
cleverness every time.
