UL Ratings: What You Need To Know
When it comes to illuminated signage, safety isn’t optional, it’s essential. That’s where UL certification comes in. If you sell illuminated
signage, understanding UL ratings can save you time, protect your reputation, and help avoid costly delays.
#1
Understand What “UL” Means
UL Solutions (Underwriters Laboratories) has been testing and certifying products for more
than a century. A UL mark signals that a product has been independently evaluated and meets
established safety standards.
For lit signage, that means the electrical components, materials, and construction have been
tested for safe use.
#2
Not All UL Services Are The Same
UL certification isn’t one-size-fits-all. It generally falls into three categories:
UL Listed
The entire finished product has been tested and meets safety standards.
UL Recognized
Individual components (like wiring or power supplies) meet safety
standards.
UL Classified
The product is evaluated for specific properties or conditions and subject
to ongoing compliance checks.
If you’re specifying signage, “UL Listed” is a gold standard for finished products.

#3
Don’t Confuse UL Listed With UL Recognized
This is one of the most common misunderstandings in signage.
A UL Listed sign means the entire unit—materials, wiring, construction—has been tested and
approved.
A UL Recognized component means only a specific part has been approved, not necessarily the
finished product.
For permitting and inspections, this distinction matters. Many municipalities require a UL Listed
mark on the completed sign, not just recognized components inside it.
