Real-World Install Challenges
You Only See On-Site
Surface Variables: The Biggest Unknown
The first surprise often comes from the installation surface
itself. Walls that appear smooth in photos may be textured,
uneven, bowed, or out of plumb. This is why site surveys are
critical, identifying potential challenges early can ensure
accurate planning, fabrication, and installation. Paint thickness,
prior repairs, and substrate condition all affect how signage
mounts and aligns.
Surface variables impact:
1 Adhesive performance
4 Installation time
2 Hardware selection
5 Final visual quality
3 Leveling and spacing
Brick, drywall, glass, tile, metal panels, and stucco behave
differently. Installers who understand substrates can
anticipate challenges, select appropriate mounting methods,
and avoid last-minute adjustments that slow installations or
compromise quality.
“We keep a lot of stuff in our truck. If we’ve been sent the
wrong hardware or inadequate quantities of hardware,
we’ll generally have what we need onboard the truck.
There’s no bigger waste of time than a midday trip to the
hardware store or running back to the shop to fetch a tool.”

UNDERSTANDING SUBSTRATES
Drywall: Easy to drill but requires anchors for
weight
Concrete/Brick: Durable but time-consuming;
anchor choice matters
Glass: Adhesive-only mounting with no margin
for error
Metal Panels: May flex or
deform under pressure
Tile: Requires proper bits and slow
drilling to prevent cracking
Substrate knowledge
reduces stress and improves
final appearance.
